Ever braved the bustling streets of New York City? Dodged a rogue hot dog vendor or two? Well, imagine attempting that feat, but for 26.2 miles, while wearing what can only be described as questionable running attire (because let's face it, some marathon costumes are out there). That's the magic (and madness) of the NYC Marathon!
The Big Apple and the Bigger Race
The NYC Marathon is a New York institution, as iconic as yellow cabs and Broadway show tunes. But how many times have runners pounded the pavement in this epic race? Let's settle this once and for all.
Drumroll Please...
There have been a whopping 55 NYC Marathons as of 2023! That's a whole lot of running, a whole lot of energy gels, and a whole lot of spectators cheering on athletes (or creatively disguised hot dog costumes).
Fun Fact: Not Every Year Was a Runnin' Year
Believe it or not, there have been two years when the NYC Marathon didn't take place. In 2012, Hurricane Sandy forced organizers to throw in the towel (safety first, folks!), and in 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic put a stop to the race. But hey, 55 out of 57 ain't bad!
