Here's the kicker: If you go back before 1845, you aren't technically in the United States. You're in Spanish Texas, Mexican Texas, or maybe even French Texas for a hot minute. So, those folks living there wouldn't have been considered Texans in the way we think of them today.

Now, this doesn't mean you can't appreciate the history of the land that became Texas. Learning about the Apache raids, the Alamo, and the fight for Texan independence is fascinating stuff. But if you're aiming to be a true blue Texan, complete with the accent and the boots, well, maybe stick to visiting modern-day Texas.
Unless, of course, you fancy learning Spanish or brushing up on your French. Then by all means, saddle up that DeLorean and give it a shot! Just don't be surprised if folks look at you funny for asking for a "sweet tea" in 17th-century Mexico.
