How Many Public Holidays In Texas

Howdy, Partner! You Want Public Holidays? Texas Has Y'all Covered (Kinda)

So, you're moseyin' on down to the great state of Texas, land of wide-open spaces, ten-gallon hats, and...well, not exactly a plethora of public holidays. Now, hold your horses (or should we say longhorns?) before you start thinkin' Texas is one big ol' workaholic rodeo. We do have some mighty fine holidays to celebrate, but they come with a Texas-sized twist.

The Lone Star State's Holiday Roundup: Federal Favourites with a Few Lone Star Twists

Texas, bless its heart, mostly follows the lead of Uncle Sam when it comes to federal holidays. We're talkin' the classics:

  • New Year's Day: A time to reflect on the past year's questionable fashion choices (those chaps were a bold move, y'all) and resolve to finally learn how to two-step properly.
  • Martin Luther King Jr. Day: A day to honor a great leader and, of course, perfect your barbecue brisket recipe. Texas barbecue is a serious business, after all.
  • Memorial Day: We remember those who served and, more importantly, fire up the grill for the unofficial kick-off to summer.
  • Independence Day: Fourth of July? More like Fourth of July Fireworks Extravaganza with a side of sweet tea.
  • Labor Day: A day to celebrate the working man (and woman), but let's be real, most Texans will be usin' this as an excuse for one last hurrah before the kids head back to school.
  • Thanksgiving Day: Turkey, family, football – the holy trinity of Thanksgiving. Just remember, everything's bigger in Texas, including portions. Pace yourselves, y'all.
  • Christmas Day: A time for family, friends, and maybe a little armadillo wrestling under the mistletoe (just kidding...mostly).

Now, here's the kicker: Texas doesn't follow the federal lead on all holidays. We politely decline Columbus Day (sorry, not sorry, Chris), but we do make a big deal out of a few others:

  • Juneteenth: Celebrating freedom for African Americans, Juneteenth is a Texas-sized party with parades, barbecues, and a whole lot of red, white, and blue.

Partial Holidays? Optional Holidays? Texas Does Things Different

Hold onto your Stetsons, folks, because Texas has a whole other category of holidays: the kinda-sorta holidays.

  • Texas Independence Day (March 2nd): State offices might have a "partial staff," but most Texans are too busy celebrating their independence with a good ol' fashioned chili cook-off to worry about work.
  • Good Friday: Officially an "optional holiday" in Texas. Up to you if you take the day off, but just remember, Whataburger might have longer lines than usual.

The Bottom Line: While Texas might not have the most public holidays, we make up for it with our enthusiasm (and possibly our slightly unconventional approach). So, come on down, grab a slice of pecan pie, and celebrate freedom, family, and maybe even a good pair of boots.
