Ah, California. The land of sunshine, surfboards, and... surprisingly, a whole lot of Marines! Maybe you're a die-hard Clint Eastwood fan who got a little too inspired by those "Gung Ho" scenes, or perhaps you just crave that sculpted physique sculpted by carrying ridiculously heavy packs on ridiculously hot beaches. Whatever your reason, you've set your sights on becoming a California Marine. But first things first, gotta find your base, buddy.

Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton: The OG Beach Boot Camp This sprawling base stretches along 17 miles of coastline, so there's plenty of sand for you to get acquainted with... face down, doing push-ups (because, Marines). You might even catch a glimpse of a real wave in between training exercises. Pendleton's the home of the 1st Marine Expeditionary Force, so if you're looking for gung-ho action, this is your spot. Just don't expect to spend your off-duty hours sipping Mai Tais by the pool (unless that pool is filled with chlorine-laced misery, that is).

Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center Twentynine Palms: Desert Daze Okay, so this one isn't exactly on the beach, but hey, at least it's not Nebraska, right? Twentynine Palms, or "Twentynine Palms-a-lookin'" as the cool kids call it (I made that up, don't judge), is all about honing your desert warfare skills. Think "Mad Max: Fury Road" with way less eyeliner and a whole lot more salutes. If you're the kind of person who enjoys a good sweat accompanied by the constant threat of heatstroke, then this is the base for you!
Bonus Round: Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego Technically not a base, but more like a finishing school for civilians transitioning into the fabulous world of jarhead-ness. This is where you'll get your head shaved, learn to yell really loud, and fold your clothes so perfectly they could cut diamonds. It's a rite of passage, and after you survive it, you'll be ready to take on any California base... or at least fold a perfect t-shirt while blindfolded.
