How Many Good Boys Does It Take to Be a Mascot? An In-Depth Investigation into Texas A&M's Reveilles
Ah, Texas A&M. Home of the Aggies, maroon everything, and the most important position on campus: Mascot. But this isn't your average fightin' chicken or creepy cartoon cat. No, sir, Texas A&M boasts the most prestigious canine companion in all of college mascotdom: Reveille.
But with such a long and storied tradition, a question naturally arises: Just how many good boys (and girls!) have held the esteemed title of Reveille? Buckle up, Aggie fans (and rival school hecklers), because we're about to dive down a delightful doggo-filled rabbit hole.
From Humble Beginnings to Canine Dynasty: A Brief History of Reveille
It all started in 1931, with a stray collie named Reveille appearing on campus. The students, ever the charmers, took him in, and thus began a tradition that would span generations. There have been nine official Reveilles since then, each a furry ambassador for Texas A&M.
Fun Fact: Reveille isn't just any old dog. She (or he, depending on the pup) is a purebred Rough Collie, meticulously chosen for herding prowess, intelligence, and, of course, good looks.
Keeping Up With the Joneses...Er, Collies: The Trials and Tribulations of Being Reveille
Being Reveille isn't all tail wags and belly rubs. This prestigious pooch has a ruff (get it?) life. Here's a glimpse into the daily grind of Texas A&M's top dog:
- Living the High Life: Reveille resides in a luxurious doghouse located near Kyle Field, complete with air conditioning (essential for a Texas summer) and a personalized water bowl (naturally).
- Entourage in Tow: Reveille doesn't go anywhere without her trusted handlers, a special unit of cadets known as Company E-2. These guys (and gals) are responsible for her every need, from morning walks to pre-game pep talks.
- A Mascot's Duties: Reveille's schedule is paw-sitively packed. Attending classes, cheering on the Aggies at games, and charming dignitaries are just a few things on her to-do list.
Side Note: There's an unwritten rule that if Reveille decides to take a nap on a cadet's bed, that cadet gets the floor. Talk about dominance!
So, How Many Reveilles Does Texas A&M Have Now?
As of today, April 27th, 2024, Texas A&M is proud to have Reveille IX leading the pack. This beautiful collie assumed her duties in 2015 and has been winning hearts (and stealing snacks) ever since.
Here's to Reveille IX and all her predecessors! May they continue to be the goodest boys and girls, leading the Aggies to victory for years to come.
