Houston's Black Mayoral History: A Lone Star Start
For a city as vibrant and diverse as Houston, you might think Black mayors would be as common as rodeos in Texas. But surprisingly, Houston has only had two Black mayors so far. Lee P. Brown, the trailblazer, became the 50th mayor way back in 1998 and served for two terms. He focused on bringing down crime rates, boosting the economy, and fostering racial harmony in the city.

Fast forward to 2015, and Houston high-fived history again by electing Sylvester Turner as its second Black mayor. Now, Sylvester wasn't just another Lee P. Brown (though Lee P. Brown was pretty awesome himself). He brought his own blend of experience and leadership to the table.
