The Native Few, the Exotic Many
Florida boasts a mere one native gecko species, the aptly named Florida Reef Gecko (Sphaerodactylus notatus). These tiny titans, clocking in at a maximum of 2 inches, are most at home chilling on the southern tip of the state, particularly in the Keys.
But fear not, gecko enthusiasts! Florida's warm climate and relaxed attitude have also attracted a whole host of introduced gecko species, likely hitching a ride on exotic fruit shipments or escaping from overzealous pet owners. We're talking about at least 10 different non-native gecko varieties, from the barking-mad Tokay Gecko (great conversation starters, terrible neighbors) to the ever-so-slightly-less-loud Indo-Pacific Gecko (masters of disguise, champions of camouflage).
