Shabbat in the City of Angels: When Does the Fun Stop (or Rather, Begin)?
Ah, Los Angeles. The land of sunshine, celebrities, and...endless questions about Shabbat.
For all you Angelenos out there, fretting about when to hit the pause button on your whirlwind week, this post is for you!
We all know that feeling. You're cruising down Sunset Strip, dodging rollerbladers and tourists, and suddenly a nagging thought pops into your head: "Wait, is it Friday night already? Is it time to trade the convertible for comfy pajamas and challah?"
Fear not, fellow travelers! Because unlike that elusive parking spot downtown, the answer to your Shabbat woes is actually quite obtainable.
Enter the Magical Candle-Lighting Fairy (or Just Google)
Traditionally, Shabbat starts with candle lighting, which usually happens about 20 minutes before sundown. But who wants to be stuck memorizing complex algorithms involving the earth's rotation and solar flares? Not this blogger, that's for sure.
Thankfully, in the age of information overload (a.k.a the internet), there are a plethora of resources at your fingertips. Here are a few trusty options:
- The trusty temple website: Most synagogues in LA have their Shabbat times listed online. It's practically like having a personal rabbi in your pocket...well, virtually, at least.
- The ever-reliable calendar app: Because who functions these days without one? Just look for the option to add Hebrew calendar dates alongside the usual Gregorian ones. Shabbat? Bam! Highlighted for your convenience.
- Let your fingers do the walking (virtually speaking): There are numerous websites and apps dedicated to providing Shabbat times for locations around the world. Just type in "Shabbat times Los Angeles" and voila! Knowledge is power, my friends.
But Seriously, Folks...
While knowing the exact minute Shabbat starts is important, remember, it's also about taking a break and recharging. So, ditch the stress, put your phone on silent (unless you're using it to check candle lighting times, of course), and embrace the peace!
Now, if you'll excuse me, I have a date with a delicious challah and a good book. Shabbat Shalom, LA!
