How Many People Escaped From The Tower Of London

The Tower of London: Escape or Die Trying? Not Quite That Easy

The Tower of London. It conjures up images of gloomy cells, ravens circling overhead, and maybe even a headless ghost or two. But throughout history, it wasn't just executions that happened within those imposing walls. Some daring souls, with a healthy dose of ingenuity (and perhaps a touch of madness), attempted the great escape!

So, how many people actually got out of the clink?

Believe it or not, despite the seemingly impenetrable defenses – think hefty walls, a moat, and those ever-vigilant Beefeaters – estimates suggest only around 37 people ever successfully escaped the Tower. That's a pretty small number considering the thousands who were locked up over the centuries.

Fun Fact: One escape attempt involved a prisoner disguising himself as a lady. Apparently, escaping wasn't the only fashion statement he was making!

But wait, there's more! The Hall of Failed Attempts

While some outsmarted the system, many others weren't so lucky. Here are a few of the more, ahem, interesting escape attempts:

  • The Rope-y Escape (that wasn't so great): One prisoner tried scaling the walls with a smuggled rope, only to be caught because, well, he forgot about the whole moat situation. Splash!
  • The Tunnel Trio (who weren't very good at digging): Three prisoners spent months digging a tunnel with spoons (seriously, spoons!). Unfortunately, their escape route ended... in another cell. Oops.
  • The Bribery Blunder: This prisoner offered a guard a hefty sum for his freedom. The guard, however, turned out to be a loyal fellow and promptly turned him in. Guess he wasn't that persuasive.

So you think you can escape the Tower?

Probably not. Those days are over, but hey, it's fun to imagine!

Disclaimer: Escaping from prison is a very bad idea. Don't try this at home (or anywhere, really).

Frequently Asked Escape-Artist Questions (that we strongly advise you not to act upon)

How to escape the Tower of London? Like we said, not recommended. But if you're stuck in a time machine, maybe try befriending a Beefeater?

How to dig a tunnel with a spoon? Very, very slowly. And it probably won't end well.

How to disguise yourself as a lady? Honestly, this one might be easier than digging a tunnel. Just remember, manners are key!

How to avoid getting caught in a moat? Maybe bring a boat next time?

How to become a historian of epic escape attempts? Read books, visit museums, and definitely don't try any of them yourself!
