Can You Tour the Houston Astrodome? A Tale of Two Domes

So, you wanna tour the Houston Astrodome, huh? Well, buckle up, 'cause this ain't your average sightseeing trip. We're talking about a concrete colossus that once hosted everything from baseball games to monster truck rallies. It's like the Titanic of stadiums – grand, historic, and currently in a state of, let's say, "suspended animation."

The Eighth Wonder of the World (Or So They Said)

When it opened in 1965, the Astrodome was the bee's knees. It was the first fully enclosed stadium, air-conditioned, and could hold more people than a small country. People called it the "Eighth Wonder of the World." Now, I don't know who counted the other seven, but this thing was impressive. It hosted the Astros, the Oilers, and even a few presidential speeches. Elvis Presley rocked the house there. Can you imagine? The King of Rock and Roll under that dome?

The Fall of an Icon

But times change. Bigger, shinier stadiums came along, and the Astrodome started to feel a bit... outdated. The last professional sporting event was in 1999, and since then, it's been mostly empty. There have been plans to turn it into a convention center, a hotel, even a water park. But nothing has stuck. So, as it stands now, you can't tour the inside of the Astrodome. It's like a ghost town, but made of concrete.

So, What Can You Do?

While you can't step inside and relive the glory days, you can still appreciate the Astrodome from the outside. It's a striking piece of architecture, and there are plenty of places around NRG Park where you can get a good view. Plus, there's always the hope that one day, the Dome will be restored to its former glory. Until then, we can dream, right?
