Sam Houston: The Lone Star State's First Superstar (Or Something Close)
So, you wanna know what Sam Houston did during his first term as President of the Republic of Texas? Well, buckle up, 'cause it's a wild ride. Let's dive into the life and times of this larger-than-life character.
The Man, The Myth, The Legend (Kinda)
Sam Houston wasn't your average Joe. He was a warrior, a politician, and a guy who really loved his naps. Okay, maybe not the last one, but he was definitely a busy guy. After leading Texas to victory at the Battle of San Jacinto, he somehow convinced everyone he was the perfect person to run the place.
Building a Nation from Scratch
Houston's first term was like trying to build a sandcastle during a hurricane. Texas was a brand new country, and it was basically broke, surrounded by enemies, and still figuring out what it was supposed to be when it grew up. But hey, at least they had Sam.
One of Houston's biggest challenges was keeping Texas from getting invaded again. Mexico was still pretty ticked off about losing, and there were rumors of Native American tribes causing trouble. So, Houston decided the best defense was a good offense (or something like that) and built up the Texas army. He also tried to make peace with the Native Americans, but let's just say that didn't go as smoothly as planned.
Diplomacy and Dollars
Believe it or not, Houston was also a bit of a diplomat. He sent representatives to other countries to try and get Texas recognized as an independent nation. And while he didn't exactly strike gold, he did manage to secure some trade deals, which was pretty sweet considering they were basically living in a tent.
Houston also had to deal with the economy, which was, let's just say, not great. Texas was in debt, and there was no money to be found. So, Houston did what any good leader would do: he printed more money. It didn't really work, but hey, at least they had a lot of paper.
The End of an Era (For Now)
Houston's first term ended in 1838, and by that point, he was probably ready for a vacation. Texas was still a mess, but at least they were a mess with a government. And that's gotta count for something, right?
