A Brief History of the Hermitage
The Hermitage was built in 1897 by Marshall Field III. It was designed by architect Robert W. Gardner. The Hermitage was one of the first skyscrapers in Chicago. It was also one of the first buildings in Chicago to have an elevator.
The Hermitage was used as a private residence by the Field family until 1925. In 1925, the Hermitage was sold to the Blackstone Hotel Company. The Blackstone Hotel Company converted the Hermitage into a hotel.
The Hermitage Hotel closed in 1974. The Hermitage was then converted into apartments. The Hermitage Apartments were completed in 1976.
