To grab the whole screen, click your keyboard's Print Screen or PrtScn key. After that, the screenshot will be copied to your clipboard.
If you're using Windows 10 or 8, you should simultaneously click the Windows logo and the Print Screen (or PrtScn) keys on your keyboard. This PC > Pictures > Screenshots would then save the screenshot.
To grab an active window, simultaneously click the Alt key and the Print Screen (or PrtScn) key on your keyboard. After that, the screenshot will be copied to your clipboard.
To create a custom screenshot, you can use the built-in Snipping feature in Windows.
