According to Einstein's theory of relativity it is impossible for an object to accelerate to the speed of light through conventional propulsion. However it is possible to create an "apparent superluminal" effect through the use of relativisticallyextended objects that is similar to that of quantum tunneling or the Cherenkov effect. In such a case instead of the object actually "moving" at a faster than light speed the object itself remains stationary while the space around it is contracted resulting in a local reference frame in which the object's displacement becomes greater than c.
