Acceleration occurs when there is a force applied to a body with mass. For example a car's engine applies force to the wheels to make the car move faster. Force can be applied in many ways for example by pushing pulling or rotating an object. However the more force that is applied the faster an object will speed up. This is because a greater force will increase the object's momentum which is equal to its mass multiplied by its velocity. As velocity increases so does momentum and with greater momentum comes greater speed.
