    There is no air resistance or gravity in space so it requires much less energy to accelerate a spacecraft to the desired velocity than it would on Earth or in an atmosphere. However if a spacecraft is traveling at high speeds even tiny amounts of gravitational pull or friction could make it very difficult to change directions or slow down.
